Wednesday March 30th - Southern Sports Network

Today we interviewed Coach Olsen of the woman's basketball team. I was the director while Tori and Jenna did camera and then Justin switched out with Jenna. The interview went well but John messed up the opening a few times and we had to run it over again but overall it went well.

Feburary 25th - FSC v Detroit Tigers Baseball

Today Jordan & I got to help John covered the FSC/Tigers baseball game. This was almost a surreal experience for me because baseball has been my life for as long as I can remember and it was so cool to see it from the other side. When we first got there we went out onto the field to film some b-roll of the Mocs batting/fielding practice. We then got to go up to the press box and were able to get a booth to film highlights from. It was really cool for me to be able to be filming the game from up there and to get to see the reporters work. At beginning of the 9th inning we went back down to where we started to try and get some of the player interviews. All in all it was a really cool experience and it definitely solidified my drive to be able to do this as my career. I can't wait to go back next year :)

Editing - Thursday February 24th

Today I edited the Southern Sports Network show from this week. I had to put in the highlights for women's and men's basketball from last weekend. We were also going to use highlights from the softball game but we didnt really have many and it looked terrible the way I put them in. We also had to fix the audio because when the tape captured it was off by a few frames.

Men & Women's Basketball v Tampa - February 22nd

Tonight was senior night for the basketball teams as they took on Tampa. I was able to go down onto the court after the women's game and before the men's game to get highlights of the senior presentations. Also for the women's game I filmed the highlights while Sami took notes and then for the men's game Nya, Tony & I took turns filming and writing down the highlights. It was a pretty intense two games and the Mocs came out on top both times.

MIDTERM

For as long as I can remember I’ve been into sports. My life has revolved around baseball, namely the Mets. I try to watch as many games as I can, I make it out to Citi Field a few times a season, I even work in a baseball stadium as a beer vendor. It’s just always made sense to me that I would want to make a career out of this, especially considering that I love it so much it wouldn’t seem like a job.
I’ve always been concentrated on being the person in front of the camera, the one doing the analysis. But for this assignment I decided to take a look at what I could do behind the camera. I searched on MLB.com and found a job opening for a line producer. While a job like this isn’t attainable right out of college it’s something that is an option some years down the line. This producing job would be for MLB Network, which produces a bunch of different nightly shows, recaps of baseball games, and live telecasts of games. It says in the description that job description that extensive baseball knowledge is a must. I pretty much have that down pat. Aside from John, everyone I know tells me that I know more about baseball than anyone they know, especially for a girl.
I like to think of myself as a fairly organized person, I always have a day-to-day list of what I have to accomplish at hand. I think that producing is something I would be good at, especially since I’ve already been able to get my feet wet and I’m only a sophomore. It also says on the description that a large part of the job is coordinating schedules and content, along with working with the on air talent. That is something that would be really easy for me. I love to make lists and plan things out like it’s my job. I almost like planning my vacations more than going on the actual vacation itself.
MLB Network is obviously a very high profile position. If you’ve made it up to working there then in my opinion that’s basically as high as it can get. Along with working for a high profile network comes a better salary and awesome benefits. The MLB website has a list of some of the benefits including: comprehensive medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance and paid time off just to name a few. Doing this has definitely opened my eyes to all of the opportunities in this field. Especially with the growth of online media I think that the industry can only improve and grow from where it is now.
Tuesday February 22nd - Southern Sports Network

Today we filmed the last sports show before spring break. Our guest was Adam, one of the captains from the lacrosse team. I directed the show today and I think that it went pretty smoothly, probably one of the best times that I've ran it. Especially considering for the first half of the show the boy scouts were standing behind me annoying me. After the show Jenna and Tony stayed with me to edit the show. We also finished the show from a week or two ago. John asked me to film the basketball games tomorrow night since its senior night. We're also going to meet Thursday at 4 to finish editing todays show and the highlights from the basketball games.

Softball v Weber State - Wednesday February 16th

This was all kind of last minute, John called me when I was at dinner and asked me if I was able to tape the softball game tonight. I got there in the middle of the first game and Justin came to help me a little bit after I got there. We filmed the rest of the first game and then a little bit into the second game my battery died. I didn't have another so I had to leave. I did get a pretty decent amount of highlights and it was interesting for me since it was the first time I was filming softball. Hopefully next time I'll be able to make it through the whole game.

Southern News Network - Monday February 14th

We didn't tape a show this morning because there weren't enough stories but we did have a meeting. We're going to continue with the two anchor format along with some mini packages and PSAs thrown in to keep the show interesting. We assigned stories for next week's show and I'm going to be writing about the men & women's swim team and how they faired in the SSC Conf Championships this Saturday.

Southern Talk - February 11th

Today we had our second show of Southern Talk, the focus of this episode was on CollegeACB and cyber-bullying. We had a counselor from the counseling center as well as Anna Birenbaum, who was personally affected by the website come to speak. In order to make the set look like a talk show we went and got furniture from the lobby of the building and carried it into the studio. We had a little bit of trouble filming the show because Justin had a shot just on Meghan and I was focused on the counselor but I had to switch back and forth when Anna spoke. However at the end of the show we realized that it would just work better if I had a two shot on the guests the whole time.

Southern Sports Network - February 10th
Today we taped the interview with Brandon Jenkins from the basketball team. I operated the soundboard for the first time ever and at first I couldn't get the sound to come thru because I didn't have two of the switches up. After the show Jordan and I started to edit the show. I put together the highlights from men's basketball as well as some of the women's highlights before I had to leave.

Tuesday February 8th - Southern Sports Network

Today our guest was supposed to be Brandon Jenkins from the basketball game but he couldn't make it due to a prior commitment. However John was able to get him to come on Thursday so we are going to meet Thursday at 4 to film the interview then I'm going to edit the show afterwards. We did film John doing all the readers though. I directed the show and did the soundboard as well. It took us two run throughs to get everything perfect.

Women's & Men's Basketball - Saturday February 5th

After practicum on Friday John asked me if I could run the basketball games on Saturday since he was doing a package on the presentations at half time. Justin, Jenna and Nya came to help me film the games. They all took turns filming and writing down important highlights. After the women's game John asked me if I could help him film the presentation on the 1981 Men's basketball, baseball and golf teams at half time. I went down and stood at half court filmed the players being introduced head on as they walked through the 'tunnel' of cheerleaders so John could have another angle if he needed it. He also asked me to come help him film interviews after the game. We spoke to a couple of the players on the team as well as a couple of the people who were part of the 81 championship teams. This was my first experience doing something more than just filming highlights and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a super cool experience overall.

Southern News Network - Monday January 31st

Today we had our second meeting for the Southern News Network, however we didn't film a show today. A lot of the freshman that were writing stories were either not paying attention to what Anna said or just writing one or two sentences. Colleen and Anna talked to them and tried to better explain what they were looking for. We also found out that John was going to be a co-anchor to help liven up the show a little bit. We then assigned stories for the next week that would be due Friday at four as always.

TOTAL HOURS: 30 minutes.

Thursday February 3rd
My reader for the week was going to be on the start of the Mocs baseball season. I wrote about their first doubleheader in which they won both games after coming from behind. Both games were walk off wins and I included who had the hits in the reader and sent it to Anna so she could look it over.

Southern News Network - Monday February 7th
Today we had our first meeting of the news show with both Colleen and John as anchors. When I walked in Anna asked me if I wanted to direct the show and some of the freshman could shadow me and learn what I was doing. It took us a couple run throughs to get the show perfect because of the anchors messing up or the prompter going too slow. All in all I liked the show a lot better with John and Colleen instead of just Colleen. I think that the show can only go up from here.

Reader for Southern News Network
I also just finished writing my reader for the Southern News Network. This week I did a story on the outcome of War of the Roses which is AOII's annual philantrophy event. I wrote about the events that took place this week as well as the outcome. Sigma Chi came in first, SAE in second, and Theta Chi in third. I sent the reader in to Anna so she can proof read it and send it back to me if I need to fix anything.

Thursday January 27th
Southern Sports Network
Today we met to film the readers for the men's & women's basketball games that we taped last night. Even though John announced it the day before only me, Dakota, and some boy whose name I forgot showed up. I set up one camera and explained how to do it to the new boy and then I ran the prompter when John was speaking. We were able to get through the show in just one take.

Editing
John had asked me earlier about editing the highlights from the games so I stayed after the show. The new kid ended up staying too so he could see how editing highlights was done. I did the highlights for the women's game first which went smoothly even though there weren't many to chose from. I did the men's game next and this took a lot longer because John had wrote such a long reader for it. I took highlights from the FSC team as well as a couple for Nova Southeastern. I had to include a lot of highlights and it took awhile to go through the tape to find them and edit them on to the timeline.

Southern Sports Network - Wednesday January 26th
We had our first taping of the sports show today, it was also the first show that we've had since Kevin graduated. We had two guests today: Lindsey Powell who is a senior on the softball team and Tarik Church who just did an athletic training internship with the Auburn football team. I thought that Tarik's interview was really interesting, it was an amazing opportunity to be able to intern with a D1 football team and even more so one that just won the National Championship. John also asked us to come back on Thursday because we needed to film the readers for the men's & women's basketball games that were playing Wednesday night.

Women's Basketball game v Nova - Wednesday January 26th
I agreed to help Jordan film the women's basketball game that night as well. A couple of the practicum kids who usually help us with the sports show came to help too. We had way too many people to really film basketball which takes two maybe three people at most. But we all took turns filming for about 10 minutes and then taking notes on the highlights.

Monday January 24th.
Today we had the first taping of the Southern News Network. Colleen Brady was our main anchor today and I ran the prompter. We had a bit of trouble at first because some of the stories were too long and weren't edited very well. Colleen quickly went over the stories and then read the whole newscast through with no trouble. Anna & Colleen decided to meet earlier next week to proof read the stories together. We also assigned story ideas for the show next Monday. I'm going to be writing about the outcome of War of the Roses which is Alpha Omicron Pi's philantrophy week. Our stories have to be submitted to Anna by Friday at 4pm.

SECOND SEMESTER

Wednesday January 19th
We had the first meeting of the Southern News Network. Anna explained what her vision of the show is and she also explained what she expects of us. If we are consistently showing up and providing good stories then we would receive one hour for our stories plus however how the show takes to tape. We assigned our first stories at the meeting. I decided to write about the upcoming swim meet and the basketball games this weekend. In my readers I wrote about how this is the last home match for the water mocs this year.. I also wrote about the upcoming mens & women's basketball games this weekend against Palm Beach Atlantic.

Meeting: 30 min.
Story: 1 hour.
