This semester I was able to get a lot more involved with Southern Sports Network. Instead of being the one that was learning everyone and helping Joe or John with shoots, I was the one in charge. Jordan & I went out and shot a lot of the soccer and volleyball games on our own this semester. There was also lots of times that I would get to teach the freshman in practicum about shooting highlights for soccer, basketball, volleyball or swimming. My favorite shoot this semester was probably the swim one. I’ve never been to a swim meet before in my life so I really had no idea what was going on. Kim came to help me with the shoot and luckily she knew a lot about swimming and the races. It was cool to get to go down to the pool deck right next to Rollins and be able to film so close to the action. I also took on a bigger role in helping put together the Southern Sports show this semester. I directed the show for the last couple weeks and this was my first ever experience with anything like that. Normally last year I just ran prompter or camera, I never was directly involved in running the show. Being in charge was weird at first for me, I’m normally a shy person when I don’t know people and I felt weird telling people what to do. However I liked being able to run the show by myself and do what I wanted to do, it was really cool to me to get experience like that. I didn’t have as many hours as I needed towards the end of the semester so John asked me to edit the sports show one day. I was nervous about that because last semester I only helped Joe edit, I was never the one doing everything. It took me a little to get a hang of everything because there were a lot of mistakes and retakes in that particular episode but I caught on after awhile. The thing that I find the craziest is that we’ll go out there and shoot an entire basketball game or an entire swim meet and yet when you do the show we only use maybe two or three five second clips of the entire game. Overall I had a great semester, I liked being in broadcast writing and broadcast one. I think that those classes helped me a lot in understanding what goes into a production and improved my writing skills, which in turn helped me with the sports show. I simply ran out of time this semester but I’m hoping that next semester I’ll be able to do my first package for the sports show as well. I haven’t had any doubts all year about being a broadcast major. Now that I’ve gotten past the boring core classes and I’m getting to do the real stuff I like it a whole lot more. Its definitely the right industry for me and taking all these classes is only making me more excited for my eventual internship and job in the industry.

Southern Sports Network - ONE HOUR
Today was our last show of fall semester and Kevin's last show before he graduates. Our guest was Jeb Halfacre from the swim team. I directed the show for the second time. I think that it went smoother today but I was still nervous. I'm not used to being the person in charge and the one that tells everyone what to do. Everyone was more concentrated this week and we were able to run through the whole show only twice before they were happy with it.
Mens Basketball v Ave Maria - TWO HOURS
Before the sports show, John asked me if I wanted to tape highlights for the game this evening. I agreed and Anna, Justin & Shelby came to help me. I set up the camera and figured out how to charge the battery while running the camera at the same time. Justin taped the first half of the game while Shelby took notes and then in the second half Shelby taped the game and Justin took notes.
TOTAL: THREE HOURS.

Thursday December 2, 2010.
Today I went to finish editing the Sports Show. We had highlights from men's basketball and swimming that I taped last weekend to edit. The hardest part for me was going through an hours worth of tape to find a minute or two of highlights that correspond to what John or Kevin were talking about. I ended up finding a few good shots for basketball that went exactly along with the voiceover and a few good closeups from swimming that went along with the voiceover too. The whole process is just very time consuming, its amazing how much effort goes into editing a short 10-15 minute sports show before airing. Alyssa and TJ were there today after the pod cast to help me and learn more about editing.

Today we filmed the last episode of the Southern Sports Network for the semester. Our interviewee today was one of the freshman woman's basketball players. I directed the show today and it was my first time doing it without anyone else's help. John and Kevin had a hard time getting the script down straight so we had to run through the show a bunch of times.
TOTAL 1.5 HOURS.
After the sports show John asked me if I wanted to edit the show. I agreed to do it since no one else could and I needed the hours. I helped Joe last semester with editing but this would be my first time by myself editing. Nya was the only one who stayed and helped me edit. I didn't have any of the highlights so I just logged and captured the show and interview. Most of the time was spent cutting out John and Kevin messing around and messing up. Nya & I are supposed to go back tomorrow to finish editing the show and adding in the highlights.

Mens/Womens Swim Meet v Rollins - Saturday November 20th
Kim & I filmed the swim meet yesterday vs Rollins. It was my first experience with swimming so I didn't really know what was going on but Kim swam in high school so that helped alot. I filmed the first half of the meet while Kim took notes and then we kept switching back and forth. At first we were on the patio by the undercafe but towards the end of the match we moved onto the pool deck to get a closer view and better angle of the races.

Southern Sports Network - Wednesday November 10th
We had our third taping of the SSN today. Our guest was the senior midfielder for the womens soccer team who will be playing in the NCAA regional tournament. We filmed the show first since our guest was going to be late and Anna was the director and I helped her out. For the interview Anna went to work on the camera and I was the director. This was the first time I did this and it was a little scary and overwhelming at first. I did mess up a few times but I was glad to get the experience of operating the switcher.

Tuesday November 9th - Volleyball v Rollins
Jordan, Kim & I filmed the volleyball game tonight against Rollins. FSC won 3 sets to 1 in a match that was well played by both teams. I filmed part of the second match and all of the fourth match and took notes while Jordan and Kim were filming. Since it was Greek Week and Greeks got extra points for their chapters for showing up there were a ton of people there. We ended up getting a few crowd shots along with the regular highlights.

SSN & Soccer
Southern Sports Network - Wednesday October 27th.
We had our second show of the year yesterday, the first of the year in the studio. Jordan, Justin, Tony and another girl worked on the show today. I shadowed Bivens as he directed the show and worked the soundboard. Our guest was one of the Martucci twins from the XC team. I think the show went alot smoother than our first show and John was able to get it all done in one take.

Womens Soccer v Lynn - Wednesday October 27th.
It was senior night for the women's soccer team and since Jordan had a camera we volunteered to head up the filming of the game. We ended up having like five or six freshman come which is really too many for soccer but we alternated every 10 minutes or so they all got a chance to film the game. Unfortunately even though the camera said there was 90+ minutes of battery, about 10 minutes into the second half the camera died. We didn't have another battery on us and the adapter wasn't long enough to reach into the press box. So we didn't end up getting all of the game.

midterm
My dream career is to be an ESPN reporter for Major League Baseball. Right now at Florida Southern I’m working on the Southern Sports Network. I haven’t been able to participate as much as I’d like because of recruitment and life getting in the way but hopefully it’ll settle down for the second half of the semester. I’m also looking into applying for the Disney College Program, which is a good way to get my foot in the door. The same company owns Disney and ESPN and it’s great to have that you worked for Walt Disney World on your resume.
In order to work with pretty much any TV company you need to be comfortable in front of the camera and know how to do live shots and write your own scripts. Knowing how to use Final Cut Pro and how to edit is also a plus because the reporting world is very competitive and the companies will be looking for the best of the best. The starting salary for a reporter will depend on how much experience you have coming into the job and where your job is located. If you started at an entry level reporter position in a place with a small station then your salary would be different than even someone just starting out in a big market area such as New York. On average the salary can range from 20,000 to 50,000 a year, with it increasing the more you more up the ranks and the bigger the market that you work for.
The reporter whose career track I choose to research was Erin Andrews. She doesn’t specifically cover just baseball but she’s a very successful reporter for ESPN and its nice to see that in a world men heavily dominate. Erin graduated from the University of Florida in 2000 with a degree in telecommunications. Shortly after she began working for FSN Florida as a freelance reporter. In 2001 Erin moved to the Sunshine Network and worked as a Tampa Bay Lightning reporter. Then in 2002 she was the studio host and part time reporter for Turner Sports. While there Erin covered the Atlanta Braves and college football for TBS and the Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers for Turner South. In May 2004 Erin Andrews first joined the ESPN Company, she served as a report for their National Hockey League coverage. Since 2004 she has worked as a sideline report for college football and started to cover Major League Baseball in 2005. Erin moved quickly through the ranks of the sports reporting world and is now one of the most well-known sports reporters of today.

Wednesday September 1st. - 30 minutes.
I attended the first Southern Sports Show meeting of the new year. This meeting was just mainly to inform the new freshman how the sports show works meaning what sports we tape and what Kevin and John expect of them. They stated that this year they really wanted to focus more on quality and that we might be able to have the show on a real TV station. At the end of the meeting we also signed up for which volleyball games we wanted to work that coming weekend and found out that me and Jordan would be in charge of the first game on Thursday.

Volleyball Thursday September 2nd, 5:45 - 8:30pm.
On Thursday Jordan & I went to tape the first volleyball game of the season. At the taping we had four or five people there for the first time with us. We explained how to properly put the camera on the tripod and the best way to film volleyball. Including zooming in when someone makes a good play or to look for interesting stuff that may be happening during the match. We also explained to them how to take notes on the game so its easier to look for when we're editing the footage. They all took turns filming the match and taking notes. However we did end up running out of tape by the end of the third set and we didn't have any more so we had to cut the filming short.
